Our Priorities
Let's define public safety as a community.
More Prevention
Our top district priority is ensuring that there are appropriate resources for preventing crimes from occurring in the first place and for alternatives to policing, including mental health and housing support for unhoused residents, deescalation training, expansion of the CARE team, violence interrupters, and similar programs and initiatives to address root causes of violence.
More broadly, District 20 requires evidence-based interventions to address gun violence in the district. Toward that end, we will push for expanding the pilot program from other districts to bring civilian traffic enforcement to District 20, freeing up officers to focus on violent crimes.
More Accountability
For the Chicago Police Department as a whole, our top priority is addressing police misconduct, which includes reigning in the out-of-control costs of settlements for police misconduct, costing the city hundreds of millions of dollars, year after year. It is unacceptable that taxpayers are on the hook for the cost of police misconduct, especially when it may be a small number of officers who are responsible for most of those costs.
In addition, the new Police Superintendent must the necessary background and experience to make progress on Chicago's large and complicated consent decree with the State of Illinois.
No Extremists
At both the local and the city level, we must get extremists—including Nazis and white nationalists—out of the Chicago Police Department, something that the Chicago City Council is also concerned with.
